Our team has completed structures, interiors, research, furniture and educational workshops in the UK, Portugal and The Netherlands. We have collaborated with a long list of people, groups and institutions, including artists, earth construction experts, regeneration projects and community groups. Focusing on the need to rediscover a harmonious relationship between culture and nature, we view situations through the lens of inter-being: seeing communities as collections of people, materials and landscapes which stretch across vast timescales. Our design process strives to be both field-based and inclusive, leading to both material and immaterial outcomes. To make the most out of the tight floor area, we designed bespoke furniture including large collaborative tables, desks and easels. The central idea regarding the workstations is that they can change function – allowing a small space to take on different arrangements easily and respond to specific spontaneous needs, moods or situations. Through a collaborative design and build, we hoped to create a pair of spaces which bring together elements of local ecology, geology and folklore. In Celtic Portuguese folklore, the 'Enchanted Moura' are described as magical genies who guard watery thresholds and awaken from their slumber in midsummer to guide humans through moments of transition. Physically, this transition might involve passing through a doorway, window or natural edge (the boundary between earth and water). Spiritually, this transition might be from the unconscious to the conscious state, or from the familiar to the unknown. These dwellings house the 'Enchanted Moura', and invite you to enjoy the threshold between land and water &amp; the process of waiting and becoming; bathing, soaking, cooling aided by porous clay,&nbsp;mud&nbsp;and&nbsp;water. We then built a timber structure over the water which we clad with materials found on site or locally. One shading panel involved the collecting of hundreds of waste canes, cutting them into nearly 2000 350mm pieces and threading them to create splayed shading. With no two pieces of bamboo the same, and big variations in diameter and usable length, we settled on a threaded bamboo system, whereby 160 carefully drilled and organised bamboo lengths are threaded onto 13 steel rods in a sequence. The sequence builds up to create a 7.5m truss structure, with a 5m span between the table legs, and admittedly a small bounce in the middle! Stories of island existence are woven tightly to the rich material landscape. They hinge upon self-sufficiency, improvisation, and resilience, locality, craft, and an embedded understanding of interconnected ecologies, in conversation with the historic and political heritage of a place. Foula is one of six islands in the Highlands and Islands successfully selected as a ‘pioneering island’ in the Clean Energy for EU Islands programme. As part of this off-grid consortium, Foula positions itself at the forefront of energy autarky. In parallell, there is opportunity to look to abundant regenerative resources as part of the case study for decarbonisation. An island brimful from soil to sea, material stories form the basis of these research investigations. By synthesising historic and future applications of materials in these island bioregions, how can oral lore, craft, and histories of the land aid the future of circular bio-based economies? In these explorations, we question how material and craft could add to an island story of reclaiming owndership of island resources and energy Autarky. Simultaneously, the beginning of this project aims towards an on-going bio-retrofit and experimental restoration project using these local resources, that platforms an exchange of shared learning for the future, whilst archiving oral lore and craft being lost amidst population decline. Developed in partnership with linguist and philosopher Samar Khan, and posthumanist scholar Ruth Clemens, two interconnected projects were showcased. Cella Collective supported the two artists in the construction of a cob and clay landscape, and ran workshops on cob construction in tandem with the residency. For centuries, the gestures of cows, farmers, and the soil have transformed landscapes into lush meadows that we are steadily ceasing to appreciate. Massive changes in our food systems will see these entities fading into history, ushering in a new chapter of “land building”. Yet our bodies, and the gestures we once used to visualize and shape our connection to the land, have largely been supplanted by technology. How can we reclaim these lost gestures?
